Max out your defenses before upgrading to the next TH
In a clan war, when matching us with another clan the computer rates our clan by assigning points based on the level of your defensive structures, army camps, spell factory, troops and walls and looks for another clan with a similar rating. The thing that I've noticed is that the computer rates your TH pretty heavily. I have seen players with better defensive buildings and a lower TH rated lower than a player with lower defensive buildings and a higher TH. We want to fight other teams that are low, so we want our rating to be as low as possible. If you upgrade your TH too early, your score goes up and now you are matched with another guy that has a lower TH, but much better defenses than you. That's not good. The bottom line is to max out your defenses before upgrading your TH. this of course is the best thing to do for raiding in the regular game too. You get more loot if you keep your TH lower.
Town Hall and Clan Castle
One of the most important things in a war base is to keep the enemy from luring out your clan troops. You want them to have to either kill buildings to lure them out or to use a giant to lure them out. Depending on what Town Hall you have, either the Town Hall or the Clan Castle should be in the dead center of your base and the other should be right next to it. For TH 8 and up, I would recommend putting the CC in the center and the TH right next to it with no walls in between. If you have TH 7 and lower, put the TH in the center with the CC right next to it with no walls in between. The reason for putting the CC in the center (or as close to the center as possible) is to make it more difficult for the enemy to lure out the CC troops. With TH 8, it is possible to set up your walls in such a way that the enemy needs to get through your walls in order to trigger the CC troops. This makes it very difficult for them to kill them. Usually the first thing to get inside the walls are the giants or hogs and when the CC troops fight them, the giants and hogs don't fight back and die fast. So putting the CC in the center can make a huge difference. Make sure there is no point on your map where an attacking goblin or barbarian will trip the clan castle troops as they attack the nearest building. You want to keep your buildings in close so your archer towers can shoot units attacking them, but not so close the enemy is able to trip the clan castle troops.
No Free Buildings
Keep your buildings in close so as the enemy archers are shooting them your archer towers and canons are taking them out. Don't let them get free buildings. that makes it easier to get 50%. Don't bring your buildings in too close though. You still want to keep them far enough out to not allow the attacking troops to trigger the clan castle.
Spring Traps
Spring traps are best used to kill three giants or hogs at a time, so the best placement of your spring traps is inside the walls, in between defensive buildings. The best way to get the giants to bunch up on a spring trap and kill three at a time is to funnel the giants with walls so that the only way for them to get from where they are to the next defensive building is to go right through the only gap you leave them (that has a spring trap in it). As you decide where that gap should be, think of hogs too. Hogs will jump the wall, so the gap should not make the giants walk around something. The gap should be in a straight line between two defensive buildings, so hogs will hit it as well. If this isn't clear, look at one of the example bases in this forum for some examples.
Mortars and Air Defenses
Mortars are the most important defensive structures you have. When they get high enough, they can kill a group of archers and barbarians in one shot (depending on their lvl). Even if they are low, the splash damage and range of the mortar is very powerful. You want the mortars to be the last thing to be killed if you can help it. The best way to accomplish that is to put them near the middle of your base.
Air defenses are critical as well. if your air defenses are in the middle and hard to kill, you may never see an air attack come against you because they know it will not work well. You may think to yourself, "I never get attacked by air, so I really don't need to put my air defenses in the middle.", but clan wars is different. People bring out the big guns in clan wars trying to 3-star a base. Make sure they don't choose an air raid on you by protecting your air defenses more in the center of your base. If they are near the edge, their ground troops will take them out early and then they will send in their air units.
Gold, Elixir and Dark Storage
In a war base you don't need to protect your gold, elixir or dark storage. While the enemy gets a little loot as they raid you, that loot doesn't come from your supply. They can't steal any of your loot in a war attack. Your loot is safe. That being said, you can now think of your storage containers as just big buildings that the enemy has to get through in order to get to what they really want to kill (your defenses and TH). The best use of your storage buildings in a war base is to place them further out, in front of some of your key defensive buildings, for example wizard towers. The idea is that you want your defenses to be shooting the enemy troops as they are attacking your storage building. Storage buildings take a long time to kill, so that gives your defenses plenty of time to kill them while they are pounding away on that building.
Hog Defense vs Giant Defense
Hogs are tough to defend against. Your walls mean nothing to them. Hogs have much lower defense than giants and can die fast if they are taking heavy damage. So the first trick to killing hogs is to tighten up your defenses as much as possible to allow more defenses to hit them at a time. (A spread out base is easier to take). The second trick to dealing with a hog attack is to put the big bombs inside your walls where hogs will get hit by them. Hogs are fast. they can trip a trap and be away from it when it goes off. This is true for spring traps and big bombs. So you will want to put those spring traps and big bombs close to a defensive building so the hogs trip the trap then stop to kill a building and stay in range to take the damage.
